Servicing the Gearbox. Is it required?
Most of us get our vehicles serviced on a regular basis. We look to get the engine oil and filter changed, air filter, pollen filter, check the hydraulics and so on.
But, when did you last change the oil in your gearbox?
Like your engine the gearbox has many moving parts and suffers an enormous amount of stress. Think of it, you have a number of cogs in there, some of which are quite small and they are having to transfer power from your engine to the drive wheel with some vehicle weighing more than 2 Tonne's. We ask a lot from our gearboxes and therefore its only fair to pay them back with a little maintenance occasionally. Clearly automatic gearboxes generally require more maintenance than their manual equivalent. For instance, Ford recommend that the gearbox oil be changed every 38,000 miles or 3 years (whichever comes first) in their Ford Kuga's using the Powershift transmission system.
